WiiM Mini

A super-compact and affordable high-res streamer

The WiiM Mini lets you add high-res streaming to pretty much any sound system. Its built-in DAC can deliver full, articulate sound from streaming music services like Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify, and more.

It can also be part of a multi-room music system that allows you to add digital and analog sources - like a turntable - with ease, thanks to its analog-to-digital (ADC) chip. And it's all housed in an unobtrusive, hockey-puck-sized component that fits where many others won't.

User-friendly streaming options

This streamer connects to your home network using Wi-Fi, and it's super-easy to set up using the free WiiM Home app for Apple® and Android™ devices. You can access and manage a bunch of music services from within the app, and control music across multiple WiiM players in different rooms (additional players sold separately). A sync audio option in the WiiM app uses a built-in mic on the Mini to get rid of any playback latency between grouped devices.

Plenty of users will take advantage of its Apple AirPlay 2 and Alexa support - both for single-zone and multi-room streaming. It also works with Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect, which give you access to the Mini natively from within those apps.

Two-way Bluetooth lets you stream wirelessly from your compatible smartphone, tablet, computer, or other device using that familiar and popular platform to play music through whatever sound system your Mini is connected to. You can also stream from the Mini to your favorite Bluetooth headphones or speaker.

Getting familiar with the Mini

I took a sample Mini home for some hands-on testing. I used an AudioQuest Evergreen cable to connect it to the 3.5mm aux input on a Boston Acoustics table radio I bought at CapitalSound.ca around 2010. Setup was fast and easy with the streamlined, user-friendly app. Within three minutes I was listening to glitch-free streaming music via Qobuz.

The Mini has the same DAC as its bigger sibling, the Pro, but with a streamlined form factor and connection bank. That makes it perfect for adding high-res streaming to things like a set of powered speakers with an aux input or a sound bar. In my home, it was an easy way to extend multi-room playback to our bedroom and bring an older but great-sounding clock radio into the streaming age instead of replacing it. You could also wring every bit of audio quality out of the Mini by using its optical digital output to connect it to a DAC you already love, like the CapitalSound.ca customer-favorite Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M.

Versatile multi-room performance

I also tested the WiiM Pro Plus and Pro at the same time. I used the Pro Plus's analog stereo RCA output to connect to my Parasound Zamp v3 driving MartinLogan floor-standing speakers. I connected the Pro to my NAD C700 integrated amp driving ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 bookshelf speakers.

Grouping and controlling all three WiiMs together worked great when I used the WiiM Home app, with fast playback response and stable settings that stay put - you don't have to re-pair every time you start a fresh streaming session. Engaging the sync audio feature quickly and efficiently corrected an initial delay between the three devices. Using AirPlay 2 to group all three streamers also worked fine, but with the slower control response and slightly less detailed sound of that ecosystem.

Flexible audio connections

You can connect to your receiver, amp, or powered speakers using the analog stereo 3.5mm aux output to take advantage of the Mini's built-in Texas Instruments DAC, which can play high-res files up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution. Or use its optical digital output to connect to your favorite outboard DAC.

You can also connect a source with an analog output - like a portable music player, or even a turntable - to the Mini's stereo 3.5mm input and synchronize playback with other compatible multi-room speakers or components in your system.
