The nine amplifier channels are rated at 105 watts per channel into 8 ohms
(20–20,000 Hz, 0.08% THD) with 2 channels driven simultaneously. This is the industry
standard measurement method — all manufacturers use it — but it's worth understanding
that real-world output with all nine channels driven simultaneously will be lower. That
said, music and film content is highly dynamic, meaning all channels are rarely drawing
full power at the same time, and the AVR-X3800H's discrete design handles those peaks
with composure.
The receiver accepts speaker impedances from 4 to 16 ohms across all channels, making
it compatible with a wide range of loudspeaker brands including Klipsch®, SVS®, JBL®,
and MartinLogan®.
Amplifier Assignment Modes
One of the most practical advantages of the AVR-X3800H is its flexible amplifier
assignment system. The nine internal amplifier channels can be configured in six
different ways depending on your setup and priorities:
- 11-Channel Mode: All nine internal amplifiers power the main zone,
while an external 2-channel amplifier handles either the Front or Height 2 channels.
This unlocks full 11.4-channel and 7.4.4-channel configurations — the most immersive
Dolby Atmos setups available.
- 9-Channel Mode: All nine amplifiers are assigned to the main zone,
powering Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, and Height speakers. The receiver
automatically allocates channels between 9.2-channel and 7.4.2/5.4.4 configurations
depending on the content.
- 7-Channel Bi-Amp: Seven channels power a standard surround layout
while the remaining two channels bi-amp the front left and right speakers.
Bi-amplification uses one amplifier for the woofer section and a separate amplifier
for the midrange and tweeter — reducing intermodulation between frequency ranges and

Auro-3D
Auro-3D is a third immersive audio format, developed independently of Dolby and DTS,
that adds Front Height, Surround Height, and Top Surround channels to a conventional
5.1 system. Where Dolby Atmos and DTS:X use object-based coding, Auro-3D uses a layered
channel approach designed to recreate the natural way sound propagates in real
environments. The AVR-X3800H is one of relatively few receivers at this price point to
support all three immersive formats simultaneously.
Auro-3D is compatible with Dolby Atmos speaker layouts using Front Height and Rear
Height speakers added to a 5.1 base system, though it does not support Top Front, Top
Middle, Top Rear, or Dolby Atmos Enabled (upward-firing) speaker configurations. Surround
Height speakers are strongly recommended for the best Auro-3D experience.
IMAX Enhanced
IMAX Enhanced is a certification program developed jointly by IMAX and DTS that
combines specially remastered 4K HDR video content with a variant of the DTS:X audio
codec tuned to reproduce the scale and dynamics of a commercial IMAX theater at home.
On the audio side, IMAX Enhanced content is mixed by Hollywood sound engineers
specifically for home playback, with the recommended speaker layout being 7.2.4 (seven
horizontal speakers, two subwoofers, four height speakers). A 5.1.4 layout is the
minimum supported configuration; for 5.1 systems, DTS Virtual:X fills in the missing
height information.
On the video side, IMAX Enhanced titles use advanced noise reduction and HDR10
remastering to deliver the sharpest, most detailed 4K image quality available for
compatible content. To take full advantage, you'll need an IMAX Enhanced certified 4K
display of at least 65 inches with HDR10 support.
Room Correction
Audyssey MultEQ XT32
The AVR-X3800H includes Audyssey's MultEQ XT32 — the highest tier of Audyssey room
correction available in consumer AV receivers. Using the supplied calibration microphone,
MultEQ XT32 measures your speakers from up to eight listening positions and generates
high-precision DSP correction filters with over ten thousand individual control points.
The result is a significantly more accurate tonal balance that accounts for both the
frequency response and timing characteristics of your room.
The AVR-X3800H also introduces a Dual Preset function, allowing you to store two
separate Audyssey calibration profiles and switch between them instantly. This is
genuinely useful — for example, storing one profile optimized for movies and a second
tuned for stereo music listening, or comparing the raw Audyssey calibration against a
customized curve adjusted through the Audyssey MultEQ Editor app.
The full Audyssey suite includes:
- MultEQ XT32: Full room correction with over 10,000 control points,
measuring up to eight positions. Compensation curves include Reference (default),
L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off.
- Sub EQ HT: Individual DSP calibration for each of the four
subwoofer outputs independently — a significant advantage over receivers that apply
a single correction curve to all subwoofers simultaneously.
- Dynamic EQ: Maintains proper tonal balance, dialogue clarity,
and surround channel levels as volume is reduced — compensating for the way human
hearing loses sensitivity to bass and treble at lower listening levels. Includes three
Reference Level Offset settings (5dB, 10dB, 15dB) for content mixed at non-standard
levels.
- Dynamic Volume: Automatically manages volume differences between
content — evening out the jump between quiet dialogue and loud action sequences, or
between programs and commercials.
- Low Frequency Containment (LFC): Uses psychoacoustic processing
to deliver full bass performance in the listening room while reducing low-frequency
bleed into adjacent rooms. Adjustable in multiple steps to dial in the right balance
for your situation.
Optional Dirac Live Upgrade
For listeners who want the most precise room correction available, the AVR-X3800H
supports an optional upgrade to Dirac Live, widely regarded as the most advanced
consumer room correction system on the market. Dirac Live uses a Windows or Mac
application along with a third-party USB measurement microphone (sold separately) to
analyze your speakers and room in detail, then applies correction filters that address
both frequency response and — critically — impulse response. The result is improved
soundstaging, greater clarity, and more accurate voice intelligibility that Audyssey
alone cannot fully achieve.
Dirac Live is available as a separately purchased software license. An optional
Dirac Live Bass Control upgrade is also available, providing individual correction for

Listening Modes and Audio Enhancements
Listening Modes
Beyond the core immersive formats, the AVR-X3800H offers a range of listening modes
for different content and preferences:
- Auto Detection: Automatically selects the appropriate decoding
mode based on the incoming signal — Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus,
DTS, DTS-HD, multichannel PCM, or stereo.
- Direct Mode: Bypasses all tone and DSP processing, playing 2-channel
or multichannel audio in its original form for maximum fidelity.
- Pure Direct Mode: Goes a step further than Direct Mode by also
turning off the front panel display and analog video circuitry, minimizing any
